Bombay Beach
Well, most of the touring is done for the year, so I’m out in the desert editing on a documentary named Bombay Beach with a talented Israeli director named Alma Ha’rel.  The film concerns the inhabitants of a small, largely abandoned town also named Bombay Beach.  So far, it looks like the doc is going to be unlike any doc I’ve seen, and this excites me to no end.  Alma has an...

Varg released! - a Black Metal post
Varg Vikernes; aka Count Grishnackh Varg Vikernes - Norwegian Black Metal legend, convicted in 1994 for the murder of buddy and fellow Black Metaller, Euronymous (pictured below), and the burning of a few 800 year-old churches, was released this week and will live on a farm in Bø, Norway with his wife and child. he had previously been given a short leave and tried to escape in a Volvo with...

Meet The Willowz The Willowz are a band from Anaheim, California.  we’ve been fortunate to have them on our May tour.  they’re young, they’re hairy and they rock. I’m trying to shoot/edit/upload more stuff these days, so I shot this stuff of them playing at Raab’s Steakhouse in Ruston, Louisiana. for further viewing, see their amazing Evil Son video.

Tulsa - April 24, 2009 Pete from People in Planes was enjoying himself so much he couldn’t help himself and joined the Toadies onstage for a rousing Pogo during the set closer, I Burn. also featured in the clip is John (PIPs’ drummer) and Tony Barsotti.

Pete from People in Planes seeing this Rhett Miller-esque vision in the dressing room means only one thing:  the tour has resumed and People in Planes are in the house.  they’ve joined our tour for the next 8 dates. we’re pleased as punch to have them back.  there are already no less than 3 ploys in place in case we ever need to remove Ian (below) from the bus. Ian from the PIPs...

Abilene, TX: Five-O said FREEZE!
we arrived for our first-ever show in Abilene, TX today.  the town is actually nice enough.  it feels how I imagined other Texas towns felt 50 years ago. a short journey that Baggins and I made from the venue proved worthwhile.  we found some abandoned houses that had been taken over by stray cats.  most were completely sketched out by our presence, but not this here kitty: he followed us...

Philly/NYC - 48 hour food consumption tally
basically, a tour for me is one long food run, with shows in between.   food is usually the best part of any day, and when your day involves 10 sweaty dudes shadowing you 24-7, you take every opportunity for joy.  and generally speaking, meat+cheese+bread is just what the doctor ordered.  therefore I was looking forward to the first two stops on this leg of the tour. Philadelphia 2.5...

pie from Giordano’s.  look how happy I am.  why don’t you bop on over to their site and have them ship a stuffed pie out to you.  though honestly, I prefer their thin crust.  both are great though!

Louisville, KY - meet People in Planes
we arrive in Louisville for the 6th of 6 shows in a row.  we’ve got new tourmates in Wales’ People in Planes.  they speak funny and they have strange names, but they’re nice fellas and then do bust out some nice big loud music. get used to seeing them here because they’re on tour with us until Thanksgiving. Ian: keyboardist, drinker, mad bastard. the PIP guys use...

a day off in Salt Lake City
pretty much whenever you’re touring you want to route the tour so that you get a day off in Salt Lake City.  not really at all, but for these purposes let’s pretend that it’s true. so when the people who tell you where you’re supposed to be tell you to drive to to Salt Lake for a day off, there’s only one thing you can do.   bowl. Toadies (minus your intrepid...

Idaho.
Boise has a lot of bricks.  they’re everywhere.    I briefly encountered these local fellas.  I asked if I could take their picture.  the guy on the left says “Can I flip the bird to Boise?”  of course, you can. Rez took this lazy Sunday afternoon as an opportunity to catch up on his music magazines. I managed to find the only pile of leaves in town.

so we played the Roxy in L.A. and found an unusually participatory audience.  best part of the night?  sleeping in my own bed. Friday - no show. but there was still work to do.  Todd and I set the internets on fire with our jaw-droppingly honest interview with the nice people at vlaze.com.  our interview and acoustic performance will be edited to make us look good and posted soon. by 5:00...

“We had 43 arrests at the concert on 45 total charges,” he said. According to the sheriff, there were 20 charges filed for possession of marijuana, two charged with possession of a controlled substance, 19 public intoxication charges, three disorderly conduct charges and one charge of a prohibited weapon – a knife.

Dos Amigos - Odessa, Texas
Toadies Sep 6, Bullrides 7 we return to Odessa, Texas despite our pledge 10 years ago to never return.  it all had something to do with my wrestling the wrong table and being chased from the club by a young local man wielding a pipe screaming ‘I’m gonna kill you with this here pipe!’  apparently it was only PVC pipe, but scary nonetheless. I can only assume it was a clerical...

me throwing a beer over the cops and into the crowd.  they looked thirsty. well, we had the silly idea to host our own annual festival, not unlike Willie Nelson’s 4th of July Picnic that has been happening in Texas every year for some 30-odd years.  it happened this past weekend and was actually more of a blast that any of us could have imagined.   the place filled up with sunburnt,...
